Description
Height and spread 9m/30ft. Erect habit, young shoots and leaves red in colour turning green as they mature. Deep crimson in autumn. Bark striped with white bands.
Cultivation
Plant in a well drained soil as soon as the leaves have fallen, or at any time during the winter or March. Stake until the tree is established. Most acers prefer a slightly acid soil but several species do well in slightly alkaline conditions.
Propagation
Sow seeds of the species in a nursery bed during March. Many cultivars have been developed, and are now grown far more than the species, but these do not grow true from seed. Named cultivars can be grafted onto a suitable rootstock in the spring.
Pruning
None is required. Any damaged branches should be removed when the tree is not carrying leaves.
